Older furnaces also shut off the gas when the pilot light is extinguished.

Clogged air filters can cause a burning smell. When the filter is dirty, it doesn’t do its job of removing dust, so the dust keeps burning. Furthermore, a clogged filter makes the furnace work too hard. The blower cannot achieve adequate air flow across the heat exchanger. Overheating can occur in your heating system.
